LinkedIn is the world’s largest professional networking website. It was founded in December 2002, launched on May 5, 2003, and since then it has gained exceptional momentum. It currently has more than 225 million members and has become the undisputed leader for business and career-related social networking.
As far as searching the Internet for information on employees is concerned, I think it is perfectly alright as long as you are not accessing private and sensitive information. As long as you are going through what the individual himself has willing shared, it should not have any problems. The motive behind any employer doing this is to ensure that he or she is hiring the person for the job. Everyone puts up pretences in job interviews. Everyone wants to look enthusiastic, determined, loyal to the company and smart. The best way to gauge someone’s true colors is to see them in all bars down situation. And what better place can there be than the Internet if you cannot observe the candidate in real life.
I think LinkedIn and websites of similar kind are very useful. With time, LinkedIn has evolved immensely and will help an individual put his best foot forward in the corporate arena. Being on LinkedIn surely helps get a competitive advantage because it portrays your skills in the best and search-friendly way. You get unmatched exposure and it makes searching by employers very easy. They can narrow down search to skills, qualifications, locations, and even things you do not want in an employee. It provides an opportunity for employers as well as employees to find the best fit as their requirements and needs.
I have joined LinkedIn not because I am looking for an employment opportunity, but because it helps me keep abreast of all the happenings in the corporate world, especially in my favorite companies. I engage in productive and enriching discussions in multiple groups and that helps me get a better view of business management, in a way that textbooks cannot provide.
